Nassau-Suffolk Chapter Project 2
Out with the old and in with the new. Thanks to the Nassau-Suffolk Chapter, Gold Star Mom’s home has a brand new boiler to keep her and her sons warm. Representatives from several LI companies made this job possible – John Griffin, General Utilities; Matt Spink, Slomins; Ron Poniatowski, Jr and Bill Anderson, Meenan; Wayne Lawrence, Petro; Bill Rella, Patterson; Will Scheiner and his dad/apprentice Bill Scheiner and John Levey, Oilheat Associates. The supporting cast included Bob Chapman, Advanced Hydronics; Joe Lambardo, Acme-Rasol and Phil Schwartz, MAS Sales. The sticker says it all,
August 2005 – Nassau-Suffolk Chapter – several months ago a group of veterans found a decaying monument to a soldier killed in the Vietnam War. In the course of their investigation they came across his Mom and siblings living in dire straights. The group “adopted” their fallen brother’s family and decided to perform a series of long overdue home improvements and general repairs.

This group included several handy individuals who could perform most of improvements and repairs, but lacked expertise in heating systems. One member of the group attended a BOCE’s class taught by Bill Anderson, District Service Manager of Meenan Oil and member of the NSOHSM. A Vietnam Vet himself, Bill heard about the conditions the Gold Star Mom was living in and brought it to the attention of the Oilheat Cares Committee and the project was approved.

As the NSOHSM team went to work ripping out the old system they took a quick break when the MAS Sales truck showed up with breakfast provided courtesy of Phil Schwartz. After breakfast, they started piping in a brand new Thermo-Dynamics boiler complete with burner, controls, zone valves, circulator, oil line and all the trimmings. As the crew assembled the new boiler, one of the students from the Oil Heat Institute of Long Island’s school added baseboard to a bathroom upstairs.

As trucks pulled away that afternoon, it was a good feeling to know that each one of them was driven by a proud Oilheat professional who felt good about doing something nice for a family less fortunate than his own.
